Athletics icon PT Usha set to become first woman president of IOA

PT Usha, an athletics icon of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), is set to take over as the new president of the International Olympic Committee.

PT Usha is set to become the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), after winning a close vote in its election held on Saturday. The 25-year-old athlete from Andhra Pradesh defeated former Sri Lankan boxer Pramod Madhavrao by just six votes after being named as the unanimous choice of the executive committee, which comprises 11 members.

The election to choose a new president was held over two rounds on Saturday. The first round was restricted to candidates from sports federations, while the second included non-sports members as well.

PT Usha, who has won several medals for India at international competitions and was part of the Asian Games team in Jakarta last year, said she was humbled by the support she received from people across India. “I am thankful to everyone who supported me and voted for me,” she said after winning the election.”I want to thank my family, friends, and colleagues who stood by me.”

PT Usha, the all-time great athlete, is set to become the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The 74-year-old is an icon in her own right; she has won medals at both the Olympics and World Championships in athletics, and she was named one of India’s most influential citizens by the Times of India in 2000.

She was also part of the Indian team that won gold at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 1990, and she received the Arjuna Award for lifetime achievements in sports.

The IOA said that it will soon announce a new president and secretary general. PT Usha, known for her athletic prowess, is set to become the new President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The announcement came in the form of a tweet from IOA president Adele Sumariwalla. The post read: “After a long wait, we are happy to announce that PT Usha will be our new President.”

Usha is one of India’s most famous athletes and has won over 100 medals in international competitions. She has competed in both track and field and swimming events.

Usha, who was elected as president of IOA at its general conference in Kolkata earlier this month, will complete her tenure as IOA president on July 31, 2020.
